Why your bio character count matters

Every social platform enforces a different bio limit, and none of them warn you gracefully. Instagram stops at 150 characters, TikTok gives you just 80, while LinkedIn allows a far more generous 220. Paste a bio written for one platform into another and it is quietly truncated — usually mid-sentence, and usually in the exact spot where your call to action was.

The count is also less obvious than it looks. Spaces, punctuation, line breaks and emojis all consume characters. A bio that reads as five short lines can easily exceed 150 characters once the invisible whitespace is included. Checking the count before you publish is faster than discovering the problem from a follower.

Writing a bio that fits

Front-load the important words. Because most platforms truncate from the end, the first line should carry your identity and your offer; the flourish belongs last, where losing it costs nothing. If you find yourself fighting the limit, the usual culprit is a list of links crammed into the text. That is what a bio page solves: one short URL in the bio, every link behind it, and characters left over for something worth reading.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can an Instagram bio have?

An Instagram bio allows up to 150 characters. That count includes spaces, emojis, line breaks and punctuation, which is why a bio that looks short can still exceed the limit.

Do emojis count as one character?

Not always. Many emojis are stored as multiple code units, and some platforms count them differently. This counter shows the character count as most platforms measure it, so treat a bio that is very close to the limit with caution.

Why does my bio get cut off even under the limit?

Some apps truncate the visible bio in certain views (such as search results or previews) even when the full text is saved. Keeping the most important words in the first line helps.

Is this bio character counter free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser, requires no account, and nothing you type is sent to a server.
